New Bargain Buys...

1 June 2009

It's back... and once again the 2008 Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz delivers great value drinking and is still only at $15 a bottle. Last year's wine flew out of the store and we have a feeling the '08 won't be hanging around for long either. The new Schist has great colour and flavour, with a slight savoury edge. Include the fact it's from Eden Valley with some restrained wine-making and you have yourself a steal.

While we are talking top value reds, there are a few others that have taken our fancy recently too;

2004 JJ Hahn Reginald Shiraz Cabernet  combines the amazing fruit from their 1914 and 1928 Shiraz plantings and the 1979 planted Cabernet Sauvignon. Made by the masterful Rolf Binder and utilising some great old Barossa vines... what else could you ask for? Answer: A $14 dollar price tag to seal the deal.

The 2005 Woodstock Shiraz Cabernet also at $14 is all about over-delivering... Now is a great time to be assessing your brand - as it's tough out in the market, so producing a wine that over delivers is a smart thing. Well Collett & Co. from the classic Woodstock have done a great job at revamping their style and freshening up a great budget beater. Using the quintessential Aussie blend of Shiraz and Cabernet from marvellous McLaren Vale fruit, they have created the perfect mix of juicy berries and dry cherries - with a slice of spice. Yum!

We've been fans of the Some Young Punks crew for a few years now, and as the ol' story goes they just keep getting better with every vintage. A great example of this is the 2007 SYP Drink N' Stick Shiraz Mataro. Still showing the rich juicy fruit as per previous vintages, but this release has another side.... The '07 is almost sinister in its approach (due to the gorgeous Mataro), but in a fun way, not an angry way. And with a $20 price tag, there's a lot of fun to have with this wine, including the stickers!
