Winter Warmers...Izway, Kalleske, Felton Road and more!

16 June 2009
To state the bleeding obvious... it's cold.. really cold and we all know the perfect remedy is a lovely and warm 'Rich Red' to help fight off those Winter blues. This week we feature a small selection of reds that are perfect for the table, couch or paddock...

Izway
2007 Izway Bruce Shiraz @ $42 a bottle.
Craig and Brian have once again produced a classic with their blockbuster Shiraz called... 'Bruce'. From some gnarly old Barossa vines the Izway team have formed a rich & opulent wine with layers of dark berries. The richness we have come to expect from these guys, but where they have really stepped up in the last two releases is the texture; viscous yet so light and inviting.
This year also brings a new wine to the Izway stables with the 2007 'Three Brians' Grenache @ $75 a bottle. From Isbel's home block comes this bush-vine Grenache, planted in 1901. The style is heading down that Chateauneuf-du-pape path with its pale mannerism and outstanding aromatics and then comes that Izway and Barossa, commanding charisma.  Only 624 bottles have been produced, so if you are a Grenache fan don't delay! Extraordinary personality and power!

Kalleske
Roast Lamb and Grenache... correction Roast Lamb and the 2007 Kalleske Old Vine Grenache - a superb Sunday winter lunch! One of the benchmarks over the past few years for Barossa Grenache, the Old Vine Kalleske lives up to all expectations. Alluring aromas will draw you to the glass with wafting notes of rose petals and pepper. Layers of plump fruit then govern the full-bodied palate, with great length backed up with some long-lasting dusty tannin. A slight change in style from previous vintages but a welcome one at that.

Bargain Winter Warmers
Looking for the perfect winter warmer without denting the budget, then look no further. Either of the 2008 Morgan Simpson Shiraz @ $18 from McLaren Vale or the 2008 Fools Bay Beached Barossa Shiraz Cabernet @ $12 are here to carry you through 'til spring... Both delivering rich, full-bodied palates, overloaded with ripe, dark fruits and a soft, juicy finish.
Talking value, and thinking Pinot? you can't go past the new 2008 Hoddles Creek Pinot Noir. At $18 a bottle and hot off the heels of winning "Pinot of the Year" in the Big Red Wine Book from Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh, how can you lose?

Seppeltsfield
If you are the type that fancies a little tipple of Port over Winter to keep the internal fires burning, then you'll know that Seppeltsfield is an Aussie benchmark; especially when you look at their unrivalled collection of fortified material dating back over a hundred years! Check out some of their range on-line, including the famed 1909 Seppeltsfield Para Centenary 100 year old Tawny at the special price of $970 or their 1988 Seppeltsfield Para Vintage 21 year old.

Felton Road
Whilst we're steering away from the powerhouse styles mentioned above, the 2008 Felton Road Pinot Noir ties in as it has steered down a darker more brooding style. Winemaker, Blair Walter seems happy with the 2008 saying... "The palate displays a plush, cushioned silkiness, with interplay of juicy, mouthwatering acid and ripe, rich raspberry and boysenberry fruit, offset with dusty bramble leaf. The finish is long and relatively complex for such a youthful wine, displaying minerals with dusty tannin and a kick of mocha". Love Felton...
