Pol, Pinot and the Pagan

22 March 2010

Easter is nearly upon us and if you are planning a four-day weekend of camping, picnics, beach-going etc, the last thing you want to forget is the wine! So, as usual, EEC is here to make life easy with a selection of Pinot Noir on sale, some cheap Pol Roger and the release of the very popular Koltz 'Pagan' Shiraz.

Pol Roger

After more than 160 years of producing some of the best sparkling wines in the world, Pol Roger still maintains supremacy as one of the best independent Champagne houses.

NV Pol Roger Brut @ $60

The Pol Brut has always been one of our favourite N/Vs. Pure, rich, green apple like fruit characters dominate with enticing hints of nuts, honey and brioche adding complexity. Yum.

1999 Pol Roger Brut @ $95

The ’99 vintage is sparkling and precise and has outstanding bright fruit - a freshly baked brioche, layered with apple turnover and slithered almonds, all tightly wound into the glass. Complete Champagne.

Pinot Noir SALE!!!

A small selection of Pinot is going at amazing prices. From everyday drinkers to top-end Burgundy we have it covered. And did we mention they were CHEAP!

2008 Ashton Hills Piccadilly Valley Pinot Noir @ $24

From the South Australian Master of Pinot, Stephen George. The Piccadilly is made for early consumption and is such an expressive wine.

2008 Kooyong Massale Pinot Noir @ $25

Another cracker from Sandro Mosele! The man consistently crafts some of Australia’s best Pinots and Chardonnays, and the current Massale belies its price point. The flavour profile has lifted dark fruits, such as maraschino cherry with some ripe plums swimming through the spectrum. There are also plenty of savoury notes with dried herb overtones

2008 Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir @ $27

Year after year, the Ata Rangi team produces outstanding Pinot. In fact everything the winery makes is outstanding and this particular red really tickles our fancy. This has lovely travel and balance helping carry the dark cherries through the palate making way to the sweet yet elegant finish.

2007 Ashton Hills Reserve Pinot Noir @ $60

An astonishing wine in the sense it holds such power and weight yet showing elegance and grace. A complex number that's definitely set for long term consumption

2006 Dujac Morey St Denis 1er Cru @ $175

"Mild reduction can't completely hide the mostly red berry fruit, earth and hints of game-infused nose that introduces ripe, serious and beautifully pure flavors that are supported by very firm yet sophisticated tannins on the admirably long and mouth coating finish. Lovely." Score: 88-91 Drink: 2013+ Allen Meadows - Burghound

2006 Dujac Fils et Pere Les Beaux Monts Vosne Romanee @ $210

"An exceptionally fresh and expressive nose this is spicy, pure and sophisticated with velvety, sappy and mouth coating medium-full flavors that possess excellent depth and length. This is impressively well-balanced and has that ineffable element of breed that sets it apart from the rest of these 1ers." Score: 90-93 Drink: 2014+ Allen Meadows - Burghound

Koltz

2008 Koltz 'Pagan' Shiraz @ $54

The 'Pagan' has now achieved cult status in SA for Mark Day and his Koltz label. It’s for a good reason too – this is damn good booze and there's not much made! Mark has hand picked a selection of Shiraz from his Blewitt Springs vineyard and dried them on racks for six weeks in the Italian “appasimento” style. These dark, shriveled little raisins yield a super rich, super intense, concentrated juice that is unlike any Shiraz we have ever seen. There are layers and layers of rich, deep, dark berry fruit, and rum and raisin chocolate, tightly bound in a sumptuous, silken structure. Lurking within however are many dark, complex, savoury notes of asphalt, crushed ants, gunpowder and rich, dark soy; the more you look the more you find. Once you've tried, you'll never look back...

You can purchase the Pagan online, or by e-mail at wine@eastendcellars.com.au and by ph 08 8232 5300. Or, just pop into the shop.

Enjoy!
