Winter Warmers and 2008 Jadot Pre-Arrival

27 May 2010

As winter sets in it's time to light the fire, crack that bottle of red and settle down on the couch. So here are a few of our favourites to kick back with and simply enjoy... plus a couple of fortifieds to really keep the home fires burning.

Izway

The team at Izway are at it again with their blockbuster wines with the release of their 2008 'Bruce' Shiraz and their new 2008 'Harold' Shiraz from Eden Valley fruit. The Bruce once again pushes the flavour envelope but still manages a level of restraint from smart winemaking. The 'Harold' is all class, a boisterous and boyish start for a wine Craig and Brian have been excited about for some time.

2009 Torzi Matthews Schist Rock @ $15

It's back... and once again the Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz delivers great value drinking and is still only at $15 a bottle. For the last two years running this wine has flown out the door and we have a feeling the '09 (being the highly heralded vintage it is) won't be hanging around for long either. The new Schist is fun, light-hearted and fresh. Showing a rich mid-palate with a sweet spot to it, a real honest wine.

2007 Palacios 'Petalos' Mencia MAGNUM's @ $99

Double the fun here! To say we are a fan of this wine would be an understatement, and not just because it's a winner in a game of options. This is like a Northern Rhone giving birth to a bottle of burgundy, the intense perfumed aromas of violet and pepper is complimented on the palate with concentrated dark fruits carried beautifully by some slick tannins. All bottled up in some special release Magnums to get the festivities on track!

There are only 12 Magnums available, all sold on a first come, first served basis.

They can be purchase online, or enquiries can be made via e-mail to wine@eastendcellars.com.au or call us on 08 8232 5300

Port.

In a country founded on fortifieds you’d think sales of ports would be bigger. Maybe it’s generational or maybe you haven’t tried the right one to get you excited. Either way the Portuguese are the masters so we’ve found a couple of producers that are ‘so hot right now’ at the right price.

Niepoort Ruby Port @ $35

Most would sneeze at the thought of drinking a Ruby Port but in the right hands they can be delightful - as is the case here with the innovative Niepoort. The Ruby is youthful, bright, fresh, impeccably balanced & oh so drinkable. You’ll be amazed at how approachable this is!

“Niepoort has quickly risen to the forefront of the Douro wine movement, while never losing a qualitative step in regards to the Ports on which his family-owned enterprise built its reputation.” Roy Hersh – For The Love of Port

2003 Quinta do Noval LBV (unfiltered) @54

Top of the food chain here and a great buy considering its pedigree, Noval are the best of the best…

“An impressive effort; displaying inky, opaque magenta from core to meniscus. Heady accents of licorice, herbs, spirit and ripe blackberries provide pleasure and kept my nose planted in the glass. It’s the unfiltered variety of LBV, which Noval is well known for and is a heavy hitter that drinks more like a young Vintage Port. It was at its best the day after it was decanted. Rich, sweet cassis and blackberry syrup roll over the tongue gently, as the acidity keeps things focused, and the grip is firm yet not astringent. Noval’s ‘03 is possibly the most 'complete' LBV since their exalted 1994. The finish shows great length and pedigree, with a hint of youthful spirit, which should settle down with another year or two of bottle age. Enjoy it now or over the next 15-20 years. Possibly the finest LBV I've tasted from Noval since the 1997. 93+ points” Roy Hersh – For The Love of Port

2008 Louis Jadot Pre-Arrival

One of our most popular Burgundy Pre-Arrivals is on again... The 2008's represent great value drinking for red and whites, as Mr Philip Tuck MW has put it, "2008 presents some wonderful surprises, and are a perfect reflection of Burgundian terroirs combined with the know-how of Maison Louis Jadot." For all of you playing at home the 08's have been compared to the style of the 2001 vintage. View the 2008 Louis Jadot Pre-Arrival Offer wines available and their prices (PDF).
