Punks Block Clonakilla and Dinner ...
20 October 2010
This weeks East End Electronic is jam-packed, in fact full, with some big name New Releases, up coming dinners, and some great upcoming Friday night tastings.
New Releases - Clonakilla, Some Young Punks & Kay's Block 6
2009 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier @ $90
Anticipation is always high for the release of this wine, and the '09 is a great reward for the patient. Don't just take our word for it, here is just some of the amazing reviews this wine has had...
"...It has to be in this book, though, because it is superb, and contends for the title of the best Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier yet. It is so silken, so finely tannic and so persistent. It tastes of roasted meats, dark cherries, boysenberries and a wild array of spices. The way its tannin curls through the finish is quite astonishing. Drink 2012 - 2030 98 points "
- Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh, The Big Red Wine Book 2010/2011
"...the palate delivers a wonderful mixture of opulent fruit, savoury complexity, and silky fine tannins that persist for an incredibly long time; only at the very end do you get a glimpse of the fine oak in use; certain to be long-lived. Screwcap. To 2025 97 points "
- James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011

2009 Some Young Punks Fierce Allure Cabernet Sauvignon @ $30
Once again the "Punks" have released two wines off a single-vineyard, biodynamic block in McLaren Vale and once again the wines are magnificent. The '09 Cabernet is leaner and meaner than the previous vintage yet with greater structure! New school Cab!
2009 Some Young Punks Lust Collides Mataro @ $30
From the same biodynamic single-vineyard that bred their Cabernet comes this seductive Mataro. Beautifully textured and layered with intriguing dark fruits and with a bright spark in the mid-palate... so soft, so smooth. Don't hesitate as this is extremely limited and sold out quickly last year.
2008 Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz @ $65
This is possibly the best Block 6 we have tried despite the conditions thrown at them! The team at Kay Brothers handled the '08 heat with aplomb. A great balance of rich fruit and classy oak. If you know the Block 6 you'll be wise to grab this...
Koltz Dinner at Ambrosini's
For what looks sure to become an annual event, we are holding the Amarone Vs "Amarone" dinner with the team at Ambrosini's. East End Cellars and Ambrosini's Restaurant would like to invite you all to an evening not to be missed... We will be placing one of our favourite Aussie producers - Koltz - up against an exciting new producer from Italy; Terre di Pietra. Plus a few other cheeky Italians to keep the night interesting.
McLaren Vale producer Mark Day (Koltz Wines) makes some of his reds in the Italian tradition of Amarone and Ripasso; notably the 'Pagan' and 'Wizard' Shiraz, so what better way to inspect this leading winery, matched with the Italian counterparts from Terre di Pietra. Terre di Pietra's wines, from the Veneto area in North East Italy, have just taken to the shores of Australia and have made an instant impact on us for their balance of power & definite grace.
So please join us on Tuesday the 16th of November from 7pm to enjoy a range of Italian style wines brought from home and abroad, matched with some delicious dishes prepared by Remo & Matthew Ambrosini and of course with your host; Paul Ambrosini. Check out the menu for the night with matching wines.
Tickets are $125 and bookings are essential. Please call Ambrosini's on 8363 2152 to book your seat now.
