March Madness with Koltz, Izway & Solita
15 March 2011
March can get pretty crazy around these parts, and we are not talking about all the usual frivolous, festival behaviour it's the amount of new releases that seem to be hitting our shelves.
This week we look at two of our favourite 'blockbuster' labels that have been building a great following over the past few years, plus a glimpse at a little Aussie Nebbiolo that has been flying under the radar. All in all there is something for everyone, with some bargain buys, a preserevative free wine and some definite cellar collectables.
Koltz
It's back folks! Koltz Wines has built a loyal band of followers over the last decade and the 'Pagan' Shiraz is the main reason behind this; this 'Amarone' style is a great balance of 'old vs new world'. A selection of hand picked Shiraz from winemaker Mark Day's Blewitt Springs vineyard has been dried on racks for six weeks in the Italian “appasimento” style. These dark, shriveled little raisins yield a super rich and super intense wine, that also shows a dark, complex side with a savoury edge. The other new release to come from Mark is the 2010 'Dog Day' Shiraz and once again he has produced a red that is sensational value! Big bright fruit that shows the balance and poise of wine you would see for $30 or more.
2009 Koltz 'Pagan' Shiraz @ $54
2010 Koltz 'Dog Day' Shiraz @ $18

Izway
We have been following the development of the Izway wines since their first release of 'Bruce' in 2004. Year after year the wines have impressed however this year the the Izway team, (Craig Isbel and Brian Conway) have produced two absolute benchmark drops that are true expressions of their varietals, benfetting from a stunning vintage like 2009. The Bruce, which has been the stable wine in the Izway portfolio is an absoulte cracker. Think blockbuster action movie with the classic chiseled hero and with your token stunning damsel in distress... In wine terms the fruit is rich and commanding, grabbing your attention, but it's not all about the power, there is a bright spot that brings a graceful side that is sure to excite. The 'Three Brians' Grenache is already a front runner for one of wines of the year... could this be one of the finest Grenache Australia has produced?! The fruit comes from Isbel's home block, bush-vine Grenache, planted in 1901. The style pays tribute to Rayas and Gramenon (two of our favourite producers) and a big call but when you try, you'll see what we mean. Its effortless approach and outstanding aromatics are exceedingly alluring, creating an easy flow. The fruit has a wholesome and pure feel that is built on a balance of savoury and richness.
2009 Izway 'Bruce' Shiraz @ $44
2009 Izway 'Three Brians' Grenache @ $72
2010 Izway 'Preservative Free' Shiraz @ $32
Solita
Now here's a great project involving one of Australia's greatest winemakers; Chris Ringland and one of our most herald scribes; Nick Stock. The Solita Nebbiolo grapes are sourced from a vineyard in Macclesfield (Adelaide Hills) and boasts a massive production of 720 bottles, plus 40 magnums.
There are classic tones of dried rose petals, cherries and mocha that would be seen prefect from a traditional Langhe. But as you explore further in your glass, the Solita illustrates a 'New World' twist... and this is what makes this wine exciting for us, it's drinkabilty! There are no aggressive tannins to scare you off, and whilst food will definitely work well, unlike the Neb's from the 'Old World' it is not a necessity. If you are interested in exploring the world of Nebbiolo this is your wine.
2004 Solita Nebbiolo @ $55
Whilst all wines are available to order online if that's not your thing you can still order via e-mail to wine@eastendcellars.com.au or phone 08 8232 5300 or even drop in to the shop for a chat.
