A dinner at Mesa Lunga with Stephen Pannell
9 May 2008
East End Cellars along with Mesa Lunga are very pleased to announce a dinner with Stephen Pannell, to have a sneak preview of some of his new releases, relive his current releases and to look at the new 2007 Kanta Riesling!
To list off Stephen's CV would take up too much room, but if we have to drop names, check these out: vintage in Burgundy at Domaine Comte Lafon and Domaine del la Pousse d’or, Bordeaux with Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, Southern France with Jacques Lurton and stints in Barolo at GD Vajra. In Australia he's been with Wirra Wirra, Seppelts, Shaw + Smith and let's not forget a 'Jimmy Watson Trophy' achieved as Chief Red Wine Maker at Hardys.
"The only surprising piece of background is that it took (an admittedly still reasonably youthful) Stephen Pannell (and wife Fiona) so long to cut the painter from Constellation/Hardys and establish their own winemaking and consulting business. Steve Pannell radiates intensity, and extended experience backed by equally long experimentation and thought has resulted in wines of the highest quality right from the first vintage. At present the focus of their virtual winery (they own neither vineyards nor winery) is grenache and shiraz grown in McLaren Vale. This is a label which is quite certain to become thoroughly iconic in the years ahead."
James Halliday - Australian Wine Companion

Tasted prior to bottling, the 2005 Shiraz/Grenache (80% Shiraz from 45-year-old vines and 20% Grenache from 70-year-old vines) spent time in large French barrels. It reveals beautiful, seamless blackberry and black raspberry aromas interwoven with scents of licorice, tar, and spice box. This expressive, superbly endowed wine will offer superb complexity over the next 5-7 years. ROBERT PARKER

"Pick of the range for me. It doesn’t have the alcohol heat of the other reds, and the flavours are more interesting. It tastes of iodine, blackberry, minerals, earth and plums, a dry aniseed-like flavour lingering through the aftertaste. Gritty tannin too works well with the style. Blend of grenache, shiraz and touriga. Tasty stuff."
Drink: 2009-2013. 91 points.

Another progression in the Kanta Riesling project... Whilst Egon's strict fruit control limited production to under 600 cases, the final product is outstanding!
