New Arrivo Release and an Alsace masterclass with David LeMire MW....

12 September 2008

Peter Godden and Sally McGill are all about Nebbiolo... Peter's background is a mix of retail, winemaking and in the science side of wines. Sally's in the importing side of the industry, looking after some very big names from Piedmont  (amongst other international stars), which keeps her finger firmly planted to her pulse. These factors combined equates to a solid foundation in making some brilliant booze, and this is exactly the outcome for their 2006 release.

You must be careful using the word "benchmark" and we always are, however we truly believe the 2006 Arrivo Nebbiolo is the new Australian "benchmark" for this varietal. A fabulous evolution has occured. The '04 was great, the '05 beautiful and then the '06 arrived! Side by side with an Itlaian counterpart, the colour is hard to tell apart. In the palate, there's fine progression and focus on the fruit with sensational powderery like tannins. Rounded out with that wonderful acid balance the Arrivo wines are known for and with some slight vegetal notes on the back. Simply, gorgeous! In fact it's sooo goood, we announce it as September's "Wine of the Month".

This year also see's the release of a third Nebbiolo in the Arrivo family - being the 2006 Arrivo Nebbiolo 'Lunga Macerazione', a wine which follows traditional Piedmontese methods. Throughout much of the 20th century, producers in the Langhe kept their Barolo and Barbaresco wines for a long period in contact with the grape skins - for 2 months or more, effectively giving them a long maceration (lunga macerazione). Some of the most profound and long-lived Nebbiolo wines were made using this technique, and it has always been the intention of Peter and Sally to use lunga macerazione in the making of Arrivo Nebbiolo wines. The 'Lunga Macerazione' spends 72 days ‘on skins’, making them almost certainly the last red wines to be pressed in Australia each vintage. This is as 'old world' as they come. Very long tannins, very round acidity and very long. This is classic and absolute class.

If you can't decide which Neb is for you, we are offering a special 6 pack with two each of the '05 and '06 Nebbiolo and the 06 'Lunga Macerazione' for only $435! Buy it here.
