Great Fathers Day Ideas!
31 August 2008
Spoil Dad!
Why not splash out this year and buy Daddy something that he will really like. Try a blockbuster Red, a sumptuous Vintage Port or even a heart starting Whisky. Here's a small selection of what we think Dad's across Australia are thinking about - all at special 'Fathers Day' prices.
He likes wine...
2006 Kaesler Old Bastard Shiraz @ $150
All in good fun with the name of course.... I'm sure Dad will get the joke.
Once opened, and when it’s young, this wine exhibits soy sauce, vegemite, mandarin rind and flowers. After a few hours with air, and more suggestive of its future, it leans slowly towards dark chocolate embedded with black ripe yet still sour cherries. After 5 hours or more, small berried fruit - black and red - start streaming though, vanilla lift adds a nice topping and ethereal afterglow.
We have been lucky enough to score a tiny bit more of one of ours and most likely Dads soon to be favourites...
Very finely aromatic, subtle and intriguing; complex aromas of dried herbs and savoury spices, juniper berries, tarragon and thyme over ripe cassis and blackberry fruit and subtle mineral notes. A full-bodied wine which is rich and yet refined. Flavours range through spicy ripe raspberry, exotic spices and dark plum fruit. The wine finishes with an abundance of fine chalky tannins and acidity that gives the wine freshness and focus.
2002 Chris Ringland Shiraz @ $900For the ultimate "I love you Dad".... comes the "Ultimate Barossa Shiraz".
Wine Advocate 100 Points.
"It is difficult to say that Chris Ringland's latest Shiraz is his best to date because he has set the bar so high. The 2002 Shiraz "Chris Ringland," sourced from a vineyard planted in 1910 with yields of 1 ton per acre, comes from a vintage Ringland describes as "too good to be true....".
2006 Magpie Estate Fakir Grenache @ $20Be very careful with your pronunciation when handing this wine over to Dad...
The 06 Fakir has actually been made from declassified fruit meant for Magpie's Gomersal grenache, and the fruit quality really shows. Exceptional complexity and depth for a $20 grenache. It's juicy, bright and food friendly. This wine has value written all over it!
Ports are his thing...1997 Quinta do Noval Silval Vintage Port @ $155Quinta do Noval have been producing amazing ports since 1715 and are considered as one of the greatest in Oporto.
"This has sweet black fruits on the nose, with an undertow of molasses providing a rich note. The palate offers lovely balance, carrying a rich, textured mouthfeel. Good grippy tannins and an excellent provision of sweet fruits. Straightforward and easy to understand, but lovely too. Needs another five to ten years." 17+/20 (December 2003) The Wine Doctor
1994 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port @ $102From a great vintage and a very under-rated producer comes this sensational VP.
“Very dark crimson with some evolution at the rim. Extremely hedonistic nose. Full, round and ripe. Nice little edge of pepper. Very positive and vigorous. Lots of sweetness on the front palate with neat, dry tannins and no excess of alcohol. Promising for the long term”. 18 Points Jancis Robinson
A wee bit of Whisky... Ardmore 12yo - Traditional Cask @ $90Brand new release from this rarely seen Highland distillery: 46%, non chilled filtered, richly

flavoured and best of all…it’s peaty!
Bowmore Enigma 12yo @ $120Great Father’s day value here: gently rich, mildly peaty along Bowmore’s famous spicy tang make for a splendid drop and best of all, it comes in a litre bottle!
Clynelish - Distillers Edition @ $130The maritime malt at it’s briskly briny best. Extra maturation in Oloroso sherry casks adds a delicious layer of fruitiness to this famously dry malt.
Don't forget about our weekly tastings every Friday night from 5-7pm and Saturday afternoon from 12-4pm. This week's selection will be a quirky range of some back vintage beauties, including wines from Kaesler, Killibinbin, Henry's Drive and more...
