2008 Giaconda Pre-Arrival

17 March 2009
Like all years, numbers are limited and we will be as fair as possible in terms of allocations but something new is at hand; new wines in fact. Alongside the Pinot, Chardonnay & Warner Shiraz there are some siblings (no Cabernet this year folks). Rick has decided to release an Estate Shiraz and a wine called Ergo Sum. The latter is a joint venture between Rick, his nephew, assistant winemaker Peter Graham and Michel & Corinne Chapoutier. Exciting indeed! So in case you’ve forgotten, this is a pre-arrival and it is all the same deal as usual, all money is needed upon confirmation of your order and the wines are due to arrive in May 2010.

Here is what will be on offer.
All notes supplied are from Giaconda.

2008 Giaconda Chardonnay @ $100 (screwcap)
The nose has typical Giaconda characters – hints of meal; matchstick and minerals with overtones of toasty oak. The 2008 while slightly more refined and elegant (due to earlier picking in cooler conditions) combines all the best aspects of the 04; 05 and 06 vintages and still maintains the length and power on the finish which is a Giaconda hallmark. This could be the most refined Giaconda Chardonnay for years, but still embodies the usual drive and power.

2008 Giaconda Ergo Sum Shiraz @ $80 (cork only)
The first wine from our joint venture with Chapoutier (previously Nantua Vineyard and now mainly grafted to Shiraz). The nose has more of the graphite and mineral characters. The palate is long and racy with emerging black pepper and very fine mouth coating tannins.

2008 Giaconda Estate Shiraz @ $80 (cork only)
The nose is wild; brambles and game with violet undertones. Concentrated lush mouth filling palate. Hints of roasted coffee. This powerful wine finishes with assertive tannins. Very much in the Rhone style. This is the first release from our Estate Vineyard amphitheatre block. After several small crops in previous years we now feel the vineyard is producing top quality fruit and can produce a stand alone wine.

2008 Giaconda Warner Shiraz @ $80
Please advise with order if you would prefer screwcap or cork.
Deep nose; violets and charcuterie in the now established style of 05 and 06; concentrated; intense; long and powerful. Lively with obvious firm tannins. This vineyard continues to impress with the depth and complexity of the fruit. It will benefit greatly from cellaring. The Warner continues to attract great reviews.

2008 Giaconda Pinot Noir @ $75 (screwcap)
A lifted scented nose of cherries and rose petals with fungal undertones. A rich powerful palate; sweet cherry fruit; exotic spices and lovely balancing tannins. This would be ideal with Peking duck. Combining the fruit of the Yarra Valley with the briar characters of Beechworth. This has all the flavours Pinot drinkers are seeking.
