Yangarra Estate; new releases on tasting this Friday.
14 April 2009
Yangarra Estate have once again come through with a stellar line up with their new releases, whether it's their generous Grenache's or a very classy Roussanne the Yangarra team are consistently producing high quality wines.
Peter Fraser and his team are committed to minimal intervention in viticulture and winemaking. With a desire to produce wines that are the most brilliant possible reflection of the Estate's unique terroir and provide a profound sense of place. And a unique Terroir is what they have! Having walked through these vineyards the best way to describe them is to think of a white sandy beach, (maybe Port Willunga just down the road). This is the key to Yangarra's unique flavours, this smooth dune of Ngankipari Sand, a precisely-delineated Aeolian, or wind-blown geological formation that was laid down about a million years ago (which is very young in Australia's ancient geology).
Enough about sand and dirt though, as the wines really speak for themselves, here they are with some notes from the Winemaker himself, Peter Fraser.
2008 Yangarra Roussanne @ $26
"A full bodied white wine with an abundance of flavour. The 2008 is a medium straw colour, with bright hues. Aromatically, there are hints of wild flowers, spice, melons and ripe stone fruits. The palate is dry but has the appearance of sweetness through these lush stone fruit flavours. Roussanne has a complexity that is difficult to describe, a wine that is fresh and vibrant, but just not in the spectrum most are used to. The wine is delicate yet full bodied, and definitely intriguing. A winemaker's favourite to watch as it changes and develops."
2006 Yangarra Old Vine Grenache @ $24
“The soil from 60 million year old geological formation, that looks like a beach, like white beach sand, the locals nicknamed it "the beach". Old gnarly vines, tough as nails, produce incredibly rich and intense flavours of dark fruits, with velvety tannins, yet with inviting perfume of fresh roses.”
2006 Yangarra High Sands Grenache @ $68
"The color is dark ruby with vivid magenta hues. Aromatically the wine is very complex with many layers of dusty rose petals, some freshly oiled leather, cocoa powder, cassis and dark cherries. The palate is extremely layered with distinct blueberry, dark cherries and a complexity of flavour that follows through in the rich mouth coating presence of the wine on the palate. The tannins are velvety and voluptuous but silky. Such balance that any hint of a higher alcohol is a mystery. The flavours linger and evolve as the wine opens up, this wine is built for the cellar and will drink well into 2020 under the right cellar conditions. A cracker of a wine."
All wines are available to purchase online, by e-mail at wine@eastendcellars.com.au, by phone on 08 8232 5300, or you can even pop in the shop and say hello.
