Cullen Masterclass
Tuesday the 29th of May,7-8:30pm - $40
We would love to invite you to this rare and insightful event downstairs in the crusty ol’ cellar (cnr North Terrace (309) and East Terrace) and while most of you would be aware of the brand, we doubt many would have had the opportunity to taste this array of back-vintage wines with such provenance - this will be the only public Cullen tasting and the only vertical of Cullen in the last five years.

Vanya Cullen’s work in the vineyard and the conversion to biodynamics has resulted in wines of purity and clarity – whether you believe in this holistic work or not you can not deny the wines look finer and even prettier.

So on the 29th of May from 7pm (to 8:30pm) we’d love you to join us and Vanya Cullen for a mini vertical of both Kevin John and Diana Madeleine. The wines will be as such:
Kevin John Chardonnay: 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007 & 2006
Dianna Madeline: 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007 & 2006
…with a fresh Semillon Sauvignon Blanc on arrival to wet thine whistle.

This will be a rare opportunity to further understand the work Vanya has put in to the vineyard and to taste a great selection of wines from this iconic Australian producer.

Tickets are only $40 - to be met with booking. You can purchase a ticket online, email wine@eastendcellars.com.au or give us a call on 08 8232 5300.

“As Gaja is one of the most celebrated names in wine worldwide, it is particularly difficult to find adjectives and descriptions that have not already been used to describe it. Still, it is a fact that Gaja wines are always absolutely exemplary in style and seductiveness. Tasted young, they display an immediately recognisable exuberance and generosity but it is only after appropriate ageing that they develop their full potential in terms of depth and complexity” Gambero Rosso Italian Wines 2011

“One thing you can say about Gaja’s wines, however: at least when you hock the house to buy a bottle, you know you are in for a bloody good drink”.
Nicolas Belfrage ‘Barolo to Valpolicella’

What more can be said… we know Angelo’s wines are expensive but as Nicolas mentions, they are utterly delicious. They’ll never be a Bruno Giacosa or Giacomo Conterno but nor do they want/need to. Their power is met with grace in a way so few other wineries can get close to.

Please see below an offer for their new releases and if you scroll all the way down, you’ll see some older vintages on offer too.

Decanter Magazine… “Another 2008 vintage saved by an Indian summer. Expect intense flavours but a more elegant structure than last year. Low yielding harvest.”

2008 Barbaresco: The 2008 Barbaresco emerges from the glass with sweet red cherries, spices, flowers and licorice. This is an attractive Barbaresco with excellent depth and a firm, tannic spine that is very nicely integrated with the fruit. The 2008 isn’t a blockbuster, but it should drink well with minimum cellaring. This is a classic, linear Barbaresco endowed with terrific energy and focus. Right now the 2008 seems to be holding its cards close to the vest. I would not be surprised to see it show even better in a few years’ time. 93 points, The Wine Advocate Issue #197

2008 Langhe Costa Russi: The 2008 Costa Russi is absolutely gorgeous. Sweet dark cherries, tar, licorice and new leather are some of the aromas and flavors that take shape in the glass. The 2008 is a firm Costa Russi, with less of the seductiveness of most years, but equally fine balance. Ideally it needs a few more years in bottle, but it is striking. The finish shows terrific intensity. The typical juiciness of the site is framed by the firm tannins of the year. Everything that makes Costa Russi such an engaging wine is here, but in a slightly smaller-scaled package than in the very finest years. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. 94 points, The Wine Advocate Issue #197

2008 Langhe Sorì Tildin: The 2008 Sori Tildin is impressive. I confess I wasn’t quite prepared for the assault of fruit and tannins here. Sori Tildin is so often a graceful, elegant wine, but that is not the case in 2008. That’s not to say elegance is missing, but this is a big, big wine with tons of intensity and richness, all woven together beautifully. It’s tough to find a comparison with a previous vintage, as this is a singular Tildin. The flavors are familiar if a touch on the dark side, but the structure is closer than that of Sori San Lorenzo. Flowers, tar, leather and licorice wrap around the palate. This is a fabulous showing and a great wine in the making. 96 points, The Wine Advocate Issue #197

2008 Langhe Sorì San Lorenzo: Gaja’s 2008 Sori San Lorenzo is impeccable from start to finish. The 2008 is a round, seamless San Lorenzo with seemingly no hard edges and terrific overall balance. The signature aromas and flavors are there, as is the wine’s typical gravitas, yet the 2008 has an extra level of sweetness, its size notwithstanding. The wine possesses striking inner perfume and fabulous overall balance. The sheer excitement of the very finest years isn’t quite there, but this is a fine bottle just the same. An explosive, juicy finish rounds things out in style. 95 Points, The Wine Advocate Issue #197

We would love you to join us for this exciting tasting presented by Radpublic and Winemakers without Borders as a part of Tasting Australia. Featuring many of our favourite wineries with rockstar winemakers from Arete, Battle of Bosworth, Bespoke Bros, BK Wines, Chapel Hill, Golding, Kanta, La Linea, Mitolo, Ochota Barrels, Oliver's Taranga, Some Young Punks, Spinifex &, Zema Estate.
WHAT: #EASTENDWINEDOWN – part of Tasting Australia
WHEN: 5pm – 8pm Thursday May 3
WHERE: East End Cellars, Vardon Avenue Adelaide

#EASTENDWINEDOWN tickets are only $15 per person via Ticketek www.ticketek.com
If you can't make the tasting, you can still try the wines! Here are a few from the producers that we have been enjoying lately...
Taras Ochota likes pushing the boundary and we think he may have reached his peak with the 2011 Ochota Barrels '186' Grenache and pulled it off too... Whole bunches of Grenache left in a barrel for 186 days, opened up and pressed on "International Grenache Day". The result is a very provocative wine, with great spice and pepper tones carried in a suave fashion.
The 2011 Some Young Punks 'The Squids Fist' Sangiovese Shiraz is another cracker from the Punks crew. Packed full of flavour, with bright red cherry and plums, with some fine tannin to complete the package. The perfect "pizza wine".
The latest vintage of Kanta, being the 2010 Kanta Riesling has now been released. From this vintage the fruit is now from a higher elevation site in Echunga, but the same style remains. Displaying citrus blossom, lime skin, green apples blended with hints of cashew and exposed slate.
The popularity of Spanish grape varieties continues to grow, and a perennial favourite of ours is the 2010 La Linea Tempranillo. Sweet and plush red berries and dried herbs creates a formidable mixture, mixed with some cola, this is a very moreish.
One of our top selling Shiraz in the shop at the moment is the second release of a wine 'sans-sulphur'; the 2011 Battle of Bosworth Preservative Free Shiraz. Don’t let the 'preservative free' tag fool you, this wine is as full bodied and robust as any McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Once again we are happy to offer a pre-arrival offer for the outstanding wines of Giaconda. Like all years, numbers are limited, so if you'd like some get in quick; Giaconda is simply one of Australia's finest producers. No Pinot Noir was made this vintage (for the pre-arrival offer that is) but once again we have Chardonnay, 'Warner' Shiraz, 'Estate' Shiraz & Cabernet, plus the second release of their stunning Nebbiolo.
Here are some barrel tasting notes from Rick Kinzbrunner.
2011 Chardonnay (stelvin) @ $110
Due May 2013
A little more racy again, a further example of power and concentration. This will develop amazing depth and complexity.
2011 'Warner' Shiraz (stelvin) @ $75
Due May 2013
A complex nose, spice, pepperand undergrowth shows lifted characters as a result of the cooler vintage. Vibrant palate, long and exotic. A little finer and lighter than previous Warner vintages. Showing elegance with a red fruit spectrum.
2011 'Estate' Shiraz' (cork) @ $75
Due May 2013
A melange of red fruits, briar, pepper and spice, very aromatic and shows great potential. Fine taut and long with Rhone like flavours, finishing with the evident fine balanced tannins extending the palate. I feel this wine will develop great finely sructured depth.
2010 Cabernet Sauvignon (cork) @ $65
Due May 2012
A lifted nose of cedar, cassis and black fruits. Ripe cabernet aroma with no leafy overtones. Powerful elegant palate showing the black fruits and cedar. Very fine with depth, concentration and fine grain tannins. Bordeaux lovers will really appreciate the fine but assertive character of this wine.
2009 Nebbiolo (cork) @ $95
Due May 2012
Extremely lifted & powerful nose of violets & tar-carries past the often quoted rose spectrum of Nebbiolo. Palate is rich & silky with an enigmatic quality that almost assaults the palate while still retaining an element of latent restrained power. Tannins are plush but still very fine & in combination with good acidity carry the palate to a long finish.
Exciting stuff indeed! This is a pre-arrival and it is the same deal as usual; all money is needed upon confirmation of your order. Delivery will be May 2013, except for the Cabernet and Nebbiolo which will be here May 2012.

Numbers for these highly sought after wines are limited and allocations will be confirmed as soon as possible. For all orders please send us an e-mail: wine@eastendcellars.com.au or give us a call on 08 8232 5300.
For anyone who missed our 2010 Giaconda Pre-Arrival campaign, they are small amounts still available on our website. Koltz 'the Pagan' Shiraz
The 'Pagan' has landed! Koltz Wines has built a loyal band of followers over the last decade and the 'Pagan' Shiraz is the main reason behind this; this 'Amarone' style is a great balance of 'old world vs new world'. A selection of hand-picked Shiraz from winemaker Mark Day's Blewitt Springs vineyard has been dried on racks for six weeks in the Italian “appasimento” style. These dark, shrivelled little raisins yield a complex, layered wine. Super rich and super intense, that also shows a dark, intricate side with a savoury edge and superb tannin completing the package.
Purchase the 2010 Koltz 'the Pagan' Shiraz online, or order via e-mail at wine@eastendcellars.com.au or give us a call on 08 8232 5300. But don't delay as it sells out quickly...
Parusso Tasting

Tuesday the 3rd of April in the EEC Cellar, 7-8:30pm - $30

Fans of all things Piedmont, this is a tasting not to miss... We are certainly keen to see these new players perform, so on the 3rd of April, we will be running through the wines of Parusso. Whilst the wines of Armando Parusso are quite new to Australia, the family have been producing stunning liquid for four generations. They have created an intelligent balance of the classic versus modern approach we are seeing in Barolo at the moment, and all with organic fruit. We are pretty big fans of Piedmont and all that it encompasses. So when a new producer is offering to showcase their wines, we are not going to say no.
We will be tasting the following wines;
’10 Rosato
‘10 Dolcetto d'Alba
’10 Barbera d'Alba
’09 Langhe Nebbiolo
’07 Barolo

The return of Sami-Odi is here!
And if you've tried the previous vintages, you’ll be as excited as we are. The 2010 edition follows the theme established in previous years by winemaker Fraser McKinley . So much thought has gone in to the production of this wine. Great packaging (stunning new label and still in a Calvados bottle), tiny production and sublime fruit. There's an element of 'new school' meets 'old' here and it totally works...

The 2010 Sami-Odi 0.534 Syrah is $80 a bottle and there is a 3 bottle limit per person. Orders can be placed online, or via phone on 08 8232 5300 and e-mail wine@eastendcellars.com.au.

Adelina

Another cracking release from team Adelina - aka Jen Gardner and Colin McBryde (from Some Young Punks fame). The '10s may have some fancy new packaging but the wines still follow the style we have come to love, with their great elegance and poise. Fresh, bright and savoury fruit are the hallmark flavours with these very small-batch wines from old Clare Valley vines. If you're looking for the more modern style of wine from Australia, then don't look any further. Class...

Telmo Rodriguez (Spain)
Meet & Greet
Tuesday the 13th of March, 5-6:30pm - Free
An evening not to be missed and one we’re pretty excited about too. Telmo Rodriguez definitely helped bring a spark back to Spain’s exported wine industry with some clever marketing and by accessing fruit from many different appellations, thus creating a formidable portfolio and one to have some fun with. From gorgeous Godello to raunchy Rioja, Telmo’s wines cover a great cross section of flavour and style. So we’d love you to pop in from 5pm (till 6:30), meet Telmo and try a quick snapshot of his wines – free.
Master Class
Tuesday the 13th of March, 7-8:30pm - $40
But if you’d like a better way to see his wines and chat with Telmo, we’re holding a master class in our cellar directly after the public event. On tasting will be the following excellent Spanish wines:
2010 Mountain Blanco
2009 El Transistor

Lucy Margaux Vineyards

Jauma
The second showing of these wines from James and we are already seeing fantastic maturity in his early winemaking years. It's no secret 2011 was a difficult vintage, so for James to make such a progression in just his second vintage is testament to his skills. His four Blewitt Spring Grenache wines are by far some of the best new releases we have seen this year from anyone!

Jauma / Lucci Project
This is a Shiraz project bewtween Anton and James from a seriously good vineyard on the border of the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. The vineyard is run by Dave Gartleman, one of the drivers of Bio-Dynamic and organic viticulture in the Hills. The boys take a parcel of fruit each, add their own winemaking personality to it, then blend them together. The final two products are outstanding savoury driven Shiraz, on the prettier end of the spectrum rather than being cloying or heavy.
2011 Jauma/Lucci 'Enfant' Syrah $30.00 each, or $26.00 per mixed 6

2011 Jauma/Lucci 'Mere' Syrah $40.00 each, or $35.00 per mixed 6
Shobbrook / didi Wines
Tom (didi) Shobbrook shot to superstardom last year winning a swag of awards and praise from many big names in the industry including wine goddess Jancis Robinson. The new releases see more expression & texture with Tom really finding his feet in the Shobbrook 'house style' and the fun that can be found with didi Wines. The wild nature of didi may not be for everyone but they are a must try with plenty of personality.

Saturday the 4th of February
Last year it was all about Hot Pants and a couple of goats… Can the boys out-do themselves this year?!?
Yes, the ‘Natural Selection' crew: Anton, Tom and James are back to show their new releases for what is always one of our favourite tastings of the year. If you've stumbled past in the last few years to check this motley crew out, you'll know it 's one hell of an event. This will be the first showing of all their new releases, featuring Anton Van Klopper's seductive 2011 Adelaide Hills Pinots, Tom Shobbrook’s Barossa beauties and James Erskine’s fantastical McLarens. Their energy is second to none and rather infectious, so be warned… you will have fun! This is your chance to try the wines and meet the characters behind them.
The tasting will be held in the shop and in the laneway outside, from 12pm to 5pm. With all the wines on show, plus cider, nibbles and music to sway you, it is sure to be a Rancho Relaxo sorta afternoon.
The Details you need to know:
Where: East End Cellars
When: Saturday the 4th of February 12-5pm
Cost: Free! No need to book either, but once we reach capacity (which we will) we cannot allow more people into the tasting... basically, get here early!
