On the 24th of May (Friday) downstairs in our cellar, we are lucky enough to have the illustrious Christopher Cannan in town. What this chap doesn’t know about wine, isn’t worth knowing; as well as being a dapper fellow and knowing the industry through and through, he also has a formidable palate. His day job is representing a fair amount of labels and instead of showing them all, we will look at a couple of brands – on tasting will be Vieux Telegraphe & JL Chave – a Rhone thing.
The line-up is as follows:
2011 Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
2008 JL Chave Selection Hermitage Blanc ‘Blanche’
2008 JL Chave Hermitage Blanc

This week we have put together two fantastic Mixed Dozens... along with our regular seasonal mixed dozen, this one being the "Autumn Mixed Dozen", we have constructed a cheeky "New Vs Old World" pack to showcase some great Australian wines alongside their "Old World" benchmarks. Both dozens have a discount with over 20% off the normal retail price and of course with free freight.

Australia Vs the "Old World" Mixed Dozen @ $355

Australian wines and especially our "alternative varieties" continue to improve in leaps & bounds and much of this is due to the understanding of oak management (less is more) and fruit extraction (sometimes, less is more). Whilst we will never take the crown off places like Montalcino, we are doing a great job of interpreting these classic varieties.

Fletcher Minion Nebbiolo 2011 Vs Marengo Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore 2010
Curly Flat Pinot Noir 2010 Vs Domaine Matrot Bourgogne Rouge 2010
La Prova Sangiovese 2010 Vs Frascole Chianti Rufina 2009
La Linea Tempranillo 2011 Vs Dehesa Gago Tempranillo 2011
Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2010 Vs Guigal St Joseph 2010
Yelland & Papps Vin de Soif Delight 2011 Vs La Vieille Ferme Cotes du Ventoux 2011

Purchase the Australia Vs the "Old World" Dozen online or send us an e-mail.

Autumn Mixed Dozen @ $288

For this dozen we have chosen some brilliant new releases that have made their way onto our shelves; wines of great value that are perfectly suited for a season delivering some perfect weather... for drinking fine wine. As always we have wines from all over the world, built around some new producers plus a few hidden gems that we have sought out. Covering an array of varieties from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz to Gamay and even a cheeky Mansois, we have spanned the globe featuring France, Italy, South Africa and of course Australia.

In the dozen you will find;
Brash Higgins Grenache Mataro
Some Young Punks Double Love Trouble
Cos Cerasuolo Di Vittoria
Best's Great Western Dolcetto
Rustenberg RM Nicholson Cabernet
Zolo Cabernet Sauvignon

The centenary vintage from this legendary Estate...

“If Dr. Manfred Prüm does not make good Riesling in a given vintage, you can bet that it was probably impossible to do. With over 50 vintages under his belt, he is not only the grand old man of the region, but also a source of inspiration for the current generation of winemakers. His inimitable, reductive style, which is often difficult to understand in its youth, and was once confusing even for his colleagues, has become the benchmark for the spatlese and auslese styles that are the hallmarks of the middle stretches of the Mosel.”
Joel B.Payne, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, 2012
“With the rise of so many excellent winemakers in the region, one might have supposed that J.J. Prüm, with its profound conservatism, might have been overtaken and left behind. Not a bit of it. The Estate remains where it has been for decades: at the summit.”
Stephen Brook, The Wines of Germany
"A mere 100 years doesn’t seem nearly long enough to reflect the unique position that the J.J. Prüm winery holds in German viniculture."
Frank Kämmer MS, The World of Fine Wine, Issue 37

Katharina Prum sums up the 2011 vintage well...
"Due to the beautiful weather conditions in spring and a rather cool summer, the hang-time was very long in 2011, similar to 2007, the grapes enjoyed excellent ripening conditions and thanks to excellent weather conditions during harvest, great qualities could be harvested, in good quantities. We harvested all Prädikate from Kabinett to TBA, only the production of Eiswein was not possible in 2011. Some good botrytis developed in October and November, allowing us to produce some Goldcapsules, and also Beerenauslese (BA) and Trockenbeeren-auslesen (TBA) to be selected – the latter will be released later, as usual.
The focus in production will be in the Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese level, and the first tastings show that the different vineyard characters of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr are expressed very pronouncedly. Also, attractive flavors and an impressive balance in the wines already at this early stage of development is striking, promising an earlier accessibility of the wines of 2011 vintage. At the same time, the complexity, elegance and excellent structure of each wine indicates a great ageing potential.
We are grateful to have been blessed with another great vintage."

Joh Jos Prüm has been a favourite producer here at EEC for many years, and they are regarded as one of the greatest German producers, plus they represent outstanding value! Numbers are limited for this release so if they are of interest please let us know as soon as possible and we will allocate them accordingly.
Download the Order Form and please return to us via email to wine@eastendcellars.com.au or fax 08 8232 2055 and we will confirm your order as soon as possible.

Giuseppe Mascarello Tasting

Thursday May 9th 6:30pm at Est Pizzeria
"Mauro makes some of the most compelling, traditional wines in Piedmont." Antonio Galloni.

“Fashions and trends never affect the style of wines from Mauro and Giuseppe Mascarello, the latest generations at an estate that has embodied Langhe tradition since the late 19th Century, not just Barolo but also Barbera, Dolcetto and Freisa from long macerations and ageing in large barrels. Apparently subtle, rarefied right from the colour and at times surprising in their aromatics, they travel through time as few other wines, frequently offering unforgettable experiences to wine lovers with patient.” Gambero Rosso.

“Monprivato has been known as a special vineyard since at least the 1600s, and a quarter century ago Renato Ratti's classification of Barolo vineyards ranked Monprivato among Barolo's ten greatest vineyards-analagous to a Burgundy grand cru.” Rare Wine Co.

On the 9th of May at 6:30pm, upstairs at Est Pizzeria, we’ll be running through the stunning wines of Giuseppe Mascarello, and more importantly a mini vertical of Monprivato! Giuseppe Mascarello are known for their finesse and perfume rather than volume and weight; and certainly the Monprivato is more akin to Burgundy than Barolo. This is a great opportunity to see what the fuss is about with this almighty vineyard.

The line-up is as follows:
2011 Dolcetto d'Alba Bricco Mirasole
2008 Barbera d'Alba Santo Stefano di Perno
2010 Langhe Nebbiolo
2008 Barolo Villero
2007 Barolo Santo Stefano
2008 Barolo Monprivato
2007 Barolo Monprivato
2006 Barolo Monprivato
2005 Barolo Monprivato
2004 Barolo Monprivato
2000 Barolo Monprivato
1998 Barolo Monprivato
1993 Barolo Monprivato

Tickets are only $140 and Est is very small so tickets are indeed limited.

If you’d like to come along, try these superlative wines and have a nibble of pizza, you can purchase a ticket online or email us at wine@eastendcellars.com.au

Some old favourites and some surprising new arrivals have got us a little bit excited so below we have highlighted a few that have just hit the shelves.

New Releases
2009 Castello di Neive Santo Stefano Barbaresco @ $140
A highlight from a recent tasting from this 'old school' producer, its real star quality is how good it looks the next day. Gambero Rosso explains it well..."Aged long and requiring time, they are not modern or easy-drinking but true to themselves. Those who know how to appreciate them also know they are worth waiting for." A Nebbiolo that offers depth whilst never looking ‘modernist’, so if putting a wine away for a years is okay with you, then this Barbaresco will reward.

2010 Monte Tondo San Pietro Valpolicella @ $23
Valpolicella doesn't always have to mean a big, spicy, monster of a red wine. There are of course softer, more delicate styles to play with like this delicious Monte Tondo... A lifted floral aroma sets the scene abound with violets and roses, with loads of spice to add intrigue. A medium weighted Valpolicella that being lighter, lends itself to a greater array of foods. This represents excellent value and is very user friendly.

2012 Brash Higgins Nero d'Avola @ $37
So the wine might not be from Italy but we think Brad Hickey is doing a great job with this Sicilian variety in McLaren Vale. Where the first years release showed definite ‘traits’ of the vintage (which incidentally we liked) the 2012 is a much safer year shall we say. The Brash Higgins Nero d’Avola is a sublime interpretation of this Sicilian varietal leaning more towards an aromatic spectrum rather than brute force. Bright cherries, herbs, good acidity, a lightness of being shall we say. All in all, forget about the varietal, forget about the techniques and simply enjoy this wine as it’s beautiful.

Bressan...
On a recent trip to Sydney our paths collided with a mad man from Northern Italy - Fruili to be exact. The man himself, Fulvio Bressan in his army jumpsuit was an enigma and his wines were captivating, intriguing, fascinating and most importantly delightful. Fulvio was resolute and passionate about using varieties that are native to his home of Fruili and respect for the vineyard. We understand these sorts of wines won’t appeal to all, the fact that the Carat is a dark mahogany colour will stop most in their tracks, but if you’re willing to be taken on a wild ride, a trip that is quite unlike anything you’ve tackled before, then we highly suggest you let us guide you through this maelstrom of a label to open up Pandora’s Box.

2006 Bressan Carat @ $57
A blend of Friulano, Malvasia and Ribolla Gialla that sees oak maturation and batonage for a year. The Carat is not your linear Clare Riesling, it is a complex and profound wine that needs to be seen. Tannic, textural, citric, orange, savoury, nutty, the list goes on.

2006 Bressan Schioppettino @ $72
Ribolla Nera, or called “Schioppettino” as it is known in Friuli is perhaps a bit easier to play with than the Carat as it looks red when it is a red, however the flavours are quite intriguing. Peppery and medium weighted with beautiful movement, the Schioppettino is a complex and fascinating wine.

(Both Bressan wines are extremely limited)

Ceretto Dinner
Tuesday April the 16th at Ambrosini's Restaurant from 7pm - $120

We’d love you to join us for what should be a memorable evening. Along with our good friends at Ambrosini's Restaurant we will be hosting a dinner with Alessandro Ceretto & Dave Fletcher. Celebrating the wines of Ceretto with special guests Brian Croser of Tapanappa Wines and Peter Godden of Arrivo.

Tickets are only $120 and numbers are limited (of course).

Matched with the fantastic food from Abrosini's, the line up of wine will be as follows;
Canapes with:
Daosa 2009, Ceretto Arneis 2011 & Tapanappa Tiers 2010
Entree with:
Ceretto Dolcetto, 2010 Tapanappa Foggy Hill 2010 & Ceretto Nebbiolo d'Alba 2010
Mains with:
Arrivo Nebbiolo 2008, Ceretto Barbaresco Bernardot & 2008 Ceretto Barbaresco Bricco Asili 2008
Cheese with:
Ceretto Barolo Prapo 2008, Ceretto Barolo Prapo 1998 & Ceretto Barolo Bricco Rocche 2008
And Petit Fours to finish with the Ceretto Moscato d'Asti 2012

To purchase a ticket you can go online, send us an e-mail or give us a call on 08 8232 5300.

Ceretto are a leading producer in Piemonte so if you’re unfamiliar, then what better way to see why, alongside the gorgeous food of Ambrosini’s. This is amazing value and will be packed with plenty of flavour.

Giaconda Pre Arrivals

Once again we are happy to offer a pre-arrival offer for the outstanding and iconic wines from Giaconda. Like all years, numbers are limited, so if you'd like some get in quick; Giaconda is simply one of Australia's finest producers.

Here are some barrel tasting notes from Rick Kinzbrunner.

2012 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay (screw cap)
-due May 2014
A further example of power and concentration. This wine is developing excellent depth and complexity. The nose is showing usual characters of matchstick and meal with funky classic Chardonnay peach fruit. The palate is balanced, with good richness, acidity and persistence. Slightly richer than the 2010 & 11 at this stage. With further barrel maturation this wine should realise its potential to become a future classic - following on from the success of recent vintages.
2012 Yarra Valley & Beechworth Pinot Noir (screw cap)
-due May 2014
A highly concentrated palate of red and black fruits, cherries, and earthy fungal characters. An assertive nose with a long palate and powerful impact. This wine shows the advantage of a longer ferment in texture and concentration. Fine grained but powerfully assertive tannins. These tannins give the wine extra long persistence with an interesting note of smoked meats on the finish.
2012 Warner Vineyard Shiraz (screw cap)
-due May 2014
A very exotic nose of Charcuterie, spices and undergrowth. Ripe black fruits lead to a rich palate, fine but assertive tannins with good balance and acidity will ensure this wine becomes deeply complex and exotic with age. The mouth feel is seamless, fleshy and balanced by great length and fine acidity.
2012 Estate Vineyard Shiraz (cork)
-due May 2014
Dark and brooding on the nose with concentrated ripe fruits. Hints of pepper, spice and game combine to give a dense nose. These characters carry into the palate. Flesh, power, and deeply engrained ripe tannins make the palate impressive in its latent power. 1.5% of Viognier seems to flesh out the palate and give that exotic edge to the nose.
2011 Cabernet Sauvignon (cork)
-due May 2013
Notes of ripe black fruit and cedar, the nose is racy and has a classic Cabernet character without showing any green edges. The palate structure is very assertive whilst still being rich and long. This wine finishes with classic fine grained firm tannins which run right through the structure and will enable long term aging potential.
2010 Nebbiolo (cork)
-due May 2013
In typical Nebbiolo fashion this wine takes time to open and to reveal its true colours; a vibrant robe, not too dark and with a typical brick hue around the edges. The nose blossoms with lots of tar and exotic spice but still shows those intriguing hints of rose petal. The palate is extremely complex, a melange of delicacy and great power at the same time. Ethereal yet mouth filling, it has a barely hidden richness with a rather more obvious long drawn-out tannic finish and good acidity. Decanting is recommended

Download the order form here.

This is a pre-arrival and it is the same deal as usual; all money is needed upon confirmation of your order. Delivery will be May 2014, except for the Cabernet and Nebbiolo which will be here May 2014.

Mixing it up with some new wines and different blends for his 2012 Spring Releases, Anton is once again tickling & tantalising our palates. One of his new releases, the 2012 Domaine Lucci Noir de Florette (only released in magnums) has already received high acclaim getting top gong for the 2012 Adelaide Review Hot 100 Wines – as there’s very little going around, I wouldn’t dawdle… Anton continues to create exciting wines of personality and great energy, so if you haven’t tried any of his goods then we wholeheartedly suggest you come down and see what he’s up to.

The wines are all limited, so if they’re of interest don’t delay...

Jauma

James Erskine has nailed it again! Confirmation being apparent in his Spring Releases from the brilliant 2012 vintage: the Jauma label continues to excite. These wines are pure, radiate life, verve and are oh so wholesome. The Danby is once again a standout for us. It’s an exciting, vibrant , fruit driven wine that is very, very easy to drink…

2012 Jauma Chenin Blanc @ $27
