We are almost there... Christmas Day that is, and quite frankly there is no better drink on the 25th or as a present to impress than with French Champagne, not forgetting New Years Eve! The following is a small selection of what we are enjoying this summer and at super prices too.
NV Agrapart Blanc de Blancs @ $87
Viva the Growers revolution! Don’t spend too much time looking at the label and focus on this stunning tight, refined, elegant Champagne. Agrapart are all about terroir; they let the soil and climate do the work, limit their dosage and then let the amazing Chardonnay fruit they source from the Grands Cru vineyards of the Cote des Blancs do all the talking. So fresh, so clean. This was one of the highlights at our recent Champagne and Friends tasting.
NV Louis Roederer Brut @ $75
Louis Roederer may have changed their label but the wines true approach stays the same. An abundance of bready, yeasty characters jump out at you, whilst the palate is clear and controlled. A rich creamy texture is complimented with notes of croissants, honey and oyster shell.
1999 Pol Roger Brut @ $110
After 160 years of producing some of the best sparkling wines in the world, Pol Roger still maintain their supremacy as one of the best independent Champagne houses. The ’99 vintage is sparkling, precise and has outstanding bright fruit. You'll see a freshly baked brioche layered with apple turnover and slithered almonds, all tightly wound into the glass. Complete Champagne.
Need something for the extra special occasion... how about these "Big Guns" on special!
2002 Louis Roederer CRISTAL @ $340
Krug Grande Cuvee @ $275
2000 Dom Perignon @ $220
NV Pol Roger Magnums @ $180
And if a Magnum is still not big enough, we have more large format Pol Roger up to a whole 6 litres worth... send us an e-mail for further enquiries. wine@eastendcellars.com.au

Whilst your thinking Champagne why not try our current "Wine of the Month" the Larmandier-Bernier Blanc de Blancs NV @ $88 a bottle
The NV Larmandier Blanc de Blancs embodies elegance - think classic 50’s black and white movies, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly drinking out of those ridiculous old Champagne glasses… This is a very polished effort with delicate notes of apples and striking floral notes. An honest and pure expression of superb Chardonnay fruit with little intervention.

La Curio...
As a retailer, we tend to have some favourite producers, which isn’t a bad thing as it implies consistency. So it comes as no surprise that another year has rolled by and we welcome back the wines of La Curio. The wines consistently blow us away for their sheer appeal and vivaciousness and once again Adam Hooper has created wines of personality and true fruit expression. Continuing his on-going passion to source premium McLaren Vale fruit, from vineyards that are extremely low yielding, that are minimally irrigated to produce fruit with an abundance of varietal character. Some of the parcels of fruit have been sourced from local bush vines which are approximately eighty years of age. Our pick this year, as is most years, is the ‘fresh as a daisy’ Nubile. So lifted and cheerful, this blend of Grenache & Shiraz is phenomenal value…

A Dinner with Nicholas Belfrage MW at Rigoni's Bistro - Tuesday November the 3rd.
We are excited to have the legendary, Nicholas Belfage MW in town for the evening.
If you’re unfamiliar with Nicholas’s work, he was instrumental in exposing Italian wines (to non Italians) many years ago with his seminal book: Life beyond Lambrusco (‘85). Other masterpieces include; Barolo to Valpolicella (’99) & Brunello to Zibibbo (’01). Prior to this he was involved in retail and obtaining his Master of Wine.
Nowadays, when he’s not putting words on paper he manages to be a wine-broker and represents a few brands known to us all, such as Pra, Tua Rita & Monte Schiavo; hence the line-up we’ll be showcasing, alongside the fabulous food from Rigoni’s.
Basically, Nicholas knows a thing or two about Italian wines and Rigoni’s make great Italian food!
So please join us on the 3rd of November (Tuesday) for a 6:30pm start at Rigoni’s Bistro (Leigh Street, City) for an intimate and informal evening of four courses matched to the wines. Tickets are $120ea and limited. For all bookings please contact us by phone 08 8232 5300, e-mail wine@eastendcellars.com.au or you can book online.
Whilst you are thinking Italian, have you seen our current "Wine of the Month" the 2004 Fattoria Zerbina di Marzieno @ $66.
This impressive wine has always been an EEC favourite and the '04 is no exception. Yes, another winner from Cristina and the Zerbina team, with this ever reliable Sangiovese blend. Whilst still maintaining pedigree, that pure grace as seen in previous vintages, the 2004 Marzieno has extended its power and depth. Dark chocolate & violet tones complete the package.

2008 Ata-Rangi Pinot Noir - Pre-Arrival @ $65 A very special offer this week, from one of our favourite New World wines. The 2008 Ata Rangi Pinot is almost upon us and after trying it last week at our Pinot Noir masterclass, we are certain it is another triumph from Helen and the team. And we are even happier to be able to offer the 2008 at the exceptional price of $65 a bottle. This wine will normally sit on the shelf at $90 or sometimes be seen on special at $75, so this price will only be for a limited time. Don't delay....

Greenock Creek Mixed Dozen Like Rockford, Noon and Wendouree, Greenock Creek has always been one of those elusive wines, you either need to wait 20 odd years to join their mailing list or camp outside for the few days the cellar door is open... Well this week you don't need to do either as we offer a very special mixed dozen containing most of Greenock Creek's new releases, but as the current release was very small we've thrown in a couple of back vintages. Here's what you get; 3 x 2008 Greenock Creek Cornerstone Grenache 3 x 2006 Greenock Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 3 x 2007 Greenock Creek Alices Shiraz 2 x 2007 Greenock Creek Apricot Block Shiraz 1 x 2005 Greenock Creek Apricot Block Shiraz This mixed dozen would normally cost $550, but it can be yours for $490, with free freight! 2008 Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz @ $80 Ben Glaetzer has produced another stunner, from what was supposed to be a difficult vintage. The '08 Amon Ra is once again a platform for Ben's style of "Authority and Presence" from 30 to 120 year old Barossa Valley vines and picking at a yield of no more then 1 tonne per acre. Like the 2007 though there is not much about, so if this takes your fancy get in quick...

The Punk's wines have gone from strength to strength over the past few years. Great booze and very smart packaging has enabled them to build a very strong following and this accolade is icing on the cake.
Successful New Releases With the amount of new wineries and wines starting up, it can be quite hard to keep up with the Jones's and to be honest, with all that we see, it generally takes a few vintages for some producers to get things right... but not always. This week we showcase new wines or wineries that have nailed it with their inaugural splash.

While you are thinking Some Young Punks we have a new wine - fresh into the store - from Colin and the crew, the 2008 SYP Double Love Trouble Tempranillo / Cabernet Sauvignon. @ $20 The first release of the Double Love Trouble is right on the mark. A blend of 70% Adelaide Hills Tempranillo and 30% Clare Valley Cabernet, this is a wine of great texture and build. Combining the sweet, cola-like fruit of Temp and the dry, dark fruit of Clare Valley Cabernet the Double Love Trouble is ready for the drinking, although a few years will do nothing but help. Get in quick though as there is not much around!
2007 Muster Wine Co. Mataro @ $21 On the label you'll see this is named Mataro/Mourvedre/Monastrell as if to make you think this is a blend of different clones, but in the end it works out to be semi-educational as they are just there to show how worldly this wonderful variety is. A full bodied wine with aromas and palate of juicy blackberries, hints of dark chocolate and a rustic earthiness, yet it is long & light in the palate. A brilliant example of Mataro/Mourvedre/Monastrell.
2007 Michael Hall Chardonnay @ $40 We have been trying to keep this guy a secret for a while but as Michael has gone out and shown his hard work around, many people are taking notice. It was late last year when we first looked at this white, and from the word go it raised the bar for South Australian Chardonnay. This wine has tremendous texture, build & layers, is tight enough and you could easily mistake this for a little Burgundy!
2006 Trevor Jones 'Wicked Witch' Cabernet Sauvignon @ $60 Trevor Jones is by no means a new player in the wine game but from last weeks tasting, this new addition blew some socks off. We all know that Barossa Cabernet can be ho-hum, so when a cool vintage like '06 comes along... Ripe enough but definitely not a Shiraz, the mid-palate lights up with a kick if sweetness, then falls back in to dry Cab territory. Balance is paramount of course, as is oak management, in fact the whole package stands tall for this first release. Class.
Kooky Village on Tasting this Friday

Nathan Burley has for sometime now been associated with the Wine Industry, with a vintage at Rockford, in Spain for a couple, then on to the UK for a stint in marketing, bringing him full circle; as we present his very first, stand alone vintage. Residing in the Barossa, with fruit from Eden, Nathan has produced some very commanding wines and is a terrific start to what looks like a very promising new venture.
So why not drop by this Friday the 11th from 5-7pm or Saturday afternoon and check out the wines.
And of course, even if you can't make the tasting, you can still purchase the Kooky Village wines on-line at www.eastendcellars.com.au, shoot us an e-mail or even give us a call, on 08 8232 5300.
